Matsumoto Shigeo (松本惠雄)

Shigeo MATSUMOTO (October 7, 1915 - February 5, 2003) was a Nohgakushi (Noh actor) playing shite (principal roles) of Hosho-ryu school.

He was born as the second son of Nagashi MATSUMOTO, a Nohgakushi of Hosho-ryu school. He became a disciple of Kuro Shigefusa HOSHO, the 17th. He studied under Kenzo KONDO. His highly skilled performance was shown in pieces such as "Ohara Goko" (the emperor's trip to Ohara). In 1990 he was designated as a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure).

Takashi MATSUMOTO, Haiku poet was his older brother.
